Decorating with Dark Wood Furniture

The popularity of light wood furniture is undeniable; but if you fancy something different, have you considered dark wood furniture?

Dark wood furniture has the ability to enhance a room, adding a warmth and presence which is both cosy, inspiring and relaxing. There’s a certain elegance that only dark wood furniture can capture; which is achieved by its rich and welcoming tones.

Dark wood furniture works well in many different interior settings – whether your home is period, classical, modern or contemporary, dark furniture can be used to create beautiful contrasts and can be dressed up or down depending on your choice of accessories and ornaments.

Make a Dark Furniture Statement

Contrasted with neutral walls, dark wood furniture can make a really bold style statement. Either by using one key dark wood piece in the centre of the room, such as a bed, dining set or coffee table, or by completely re-decorating in sumptuous dark tones, it’s a sure-fire way to stand out from the crowd.

Dark wood bedroom furniture adds an exotic feel to the bedroom when enhanced by soft accent colours and fabrics, and depending on the choice of wall colour and soft furnishings, can create a rich and romantic feel or a bold contemporary atmosphere in any room in the home.

The Mantis Dark Solid Mango Coffee / End Table would be excellent in the bedroom as a bedside chest, and demonstrates an unshakeable sense of style with its clean-cut lines and a delectable dark stained finish.

Medium dark woods add more colour to the room and can range from the rich dark honey brown of stained oak to the rusty reds of our Tokyo Brown Teak Solid Mango collection, or the deep vermillion of our classic mahogany ranges.

Spring Cleaning: Storage Solutions

It’s that time of the year again; as winter is slowly drawing to a close, the first hints of spring are in the air. Over the coming weeks, lots of you will be getting ready for a long-awaited spring clean…

For some, the spring clean heralds a big donation of unearthed and unwanted bits and pieces to the local charity shop, but there are always bits and bobs to hold on to; still in need of a home within the home.

What better way to reward your hard work than to splash out on some new storage furniture to hide away some of that clutter which is always unearthed in a thorough spring clean.

In the next two blog posts we will look at the Top 5 Storage Solutions:

1. CD and DVD Storage Furniture

For the avid CD or DVD collector, the question of where to store your prized items is often a tricky one. It’s amazing how quickly they stack up, until you resort to making several multi-coloured towers in the corner of the room because you’ve run out of drawers or shelf space.

Alto Solid Oak Media Cabinet

Investing in CD and DVD storage furniture can help you keep your collection neat and tidy. If you like to see your entire collection at all times, perhaps the best option would be to buy a bookcase. We stock traditional bookcases in many different heights and widths to suit any space. If you only collect your favourites, you could opt for something like the Rustic Solid Oak Wide Bookcase; or if you’re a dedicated collector, perhaps the Tokyo Solid Oak Tall Bookcase would be more practical.

If you’d prefer the multi-coloured spines to be hidden, then a dedicated piece of CD and DVD storage furniture would be ideal. Take a look at the Alto Solid Oak Media Cabinet – handcrafted from premium grade solid oak throughout it features a large cupboard space with eight compartments for 120 standard CD cases, and a storage area for your Hi-Fi or more CDs!

2. Display Storage Units

Some items in the home may not serve a specific purpose, but deserve to be stored and displayed properly to make the most of their beauty. We all have knickknacks, vases, ornaments, family heirlooms and various curios. If your collection is cluttering up a mantelpiece or windowsill, why not have a look at a safer and more suitable storage solution. Our glazed dressers give you the opportunity to save your display items from dust and damage by putting them behind glass. Many of our dressers and cabinets also incorporate solid oak cupboard spaces and shelves, to store away items that don’t necessarily need displaying.

For items which don’t need the protection of glass doors, discover our selection of E display units. These striking and sturdy units provide shelving with a stylish twist; ideal for displaying eye-catching ornaments in a room with characteristically smart and contemporary decor.

3. Blanket Boxes and Storage Trunks

Some clutter simply needs to be hidden away! In these cases, a storage trunk or chest can be ideal. In most of our ranges, we stock a storage trunk or blanket box type storage unit to complement the style and finish of the collection.

These blanket boxes can be used for pretty much anything. We’ve seen them in use as shoe storage or various sports equipment in the hallway, for blankets and bedding at the foot of the bed, for toys and musical instruments in the kids’ room, or even as a sturdy, multipurpose coffee table in the sitting room. As a simple hidden storage solution, it’s hard to beat!

Bigger and Better: TV Stands for Flat Screens

Over the last 10 years, televisions have become bigger, shinier and more bombastic than ever before imagined! Widescreen took over long ago as the top format; the reasons behind this are firstly that widescreen mirrors the way we view the world more closely than the compact 4:3 screen. Secondly, it simply provides more space for action and entertainment: far more satisfying, especially when the whole family is crowded around the screen.

Now that we’re moving into a world of plasma flat screens and HD, television sets are more and more deserving of a bespoke cabinet or storage unit in which to house the screen and all associated paraphernalia.

Below, we’ve looked at the pros and cons of different television storage options to help you to find the best TV unit for your needs.

TV Wall Mounts

The most space saving option, and quite a common one, would be to mount the TV on the wall. Although this can look stylish and add to a minimal look in a room, there are a number of downsides. Although wall mounts can be cheap, consider the wider expense and effort involved. You’ll need the right tools to install it for a start, and possess some handy DIY skills. If you’re not so confident with a drill; perhaps it’s wise to look for another solution!

With more of us than ever living in rented accommodation, it is often not possible or convenient to put the money and effort into wall mounting a television in a room that you may not be living in forever. If there’s a likelihood of you moving home any time soon, you will face the hassle of dismantling your TV wall mount and starting again.

There’s also the dilemma of what to do with the trailing wires. With a telly mounted over a mantelpiece, for example, wires can often be pinned discreetly out of the way. However, if you want your telly to be the big feature on a blank wall, you’re looking at messy trailing wires or a costly visit from an electrician.

The other downside to wall mounting your telly is the loss of storage options. A TV unit for your flat screen will often give you plenty of shelf and cupboard space for all the bits and bobs which accompany the telly.

Hidden TV Storage

There is always the option to hide away your widescreen in a large unit with cupboard doors or a screen hiding the TV away. This can be beneficial for the purpose of protecting the screen from dust and damage – especially when you have kids running around. It can also be nice to keep the telly out of the way when you want the focus of the evening to be good old fashioned conversation and not the latest TV talent show!

However, these units are not for everyone, it’s quite possible that your new widescreen is something you’d want to show off, not hide away!

Corner TV Unit

A corner TV unit for your flat screen television is a great choice. They’re very popular as they make good use of an often-neglected but highly useful area of the room. Positioning the telly in the corner means that the screen is often more easily angled into the centre of the room which is generally the best position for easy viewing by multiple telly-watchers. Corner TV units are common in many shapes and sizes. Our solid oak corner TV units are all crafted from solid hardwood and come in a variety of designs, all from wider ranges which carry numerous matching items.

For example, the Newark Solid Oak Corner TV Cabinet is made from premium grade oak timber and offers flexible storage options with a wide shelf and generously-sized drawer.

TV Stands for Flat Screens

Available in just about any style, size and finish, TV stands for flat screens will comfortably hold a widescreen television, often with added storage for all manner of accessories. All our TV units form part of larger ranges of fully matching furniture; which means you can choose items which will complement one another perfectly.

When you invest in a standard TV stand, you can easily take it with you when you move home, you can move it effortlessly around your living space whenever you feel the need for a change and there’s no need to worry about trailing wires – these are neatly routed out to the nearest available socket through an opening in the back of the unit.

Our TV units have the added advantages of being crafted from solid hardwood, meaning that they are longer lasting and more robust than most and will stand up to everyday wear and tear beautifully.

Many TV units incorporate space for not only DVD players and games consoles, but discs, remotes and other bits and bobs, too. All of our TV units have a DVD player shelf at the very least and some designs include drawers, cupboards and oodles of various storage spaces. Explore our entire selection of TV cabinets to see what’s on offer.
